Mexican ambassador on immigration

Via Latinista.net: the new Mexican ambassador to the United States gave an interview to the Dallas Morning News that is extraordinarily candid. Refreshingly candid, really. The highlights:

  • He said immigration reform was certainly necessary, but would not stop people from coming.
  • Why won’t U.S. policies stop them? “Comprehensive immigration starts in Mexico, that is, our ability to generate the jobs and the economic growth that are needed to dampen the causes that push Mexican migrants across the border.”
  • Mexico needs to address its abuses of Central American migrants: “Mexico cannot preach to the North what we don't do to the South.”

This comes as President Bush is trying to push for immigration reform, though his proposal shows far less common sense.

In response to the Ambassador’s statement

Mexico needs to address its abuses of Central American migrants: “Mexico cannot preach to the North what we don't do to the South.”

I agree with the Ambassador’s statement on this matter. However, it should be added that Mexicans in Mexico have no right to criticize Americans for racism against our immigrants when they still treat their own indigenous population like crap. Mexico, like most of Latin America, is a society where you are able to take pride in how “fair skinned, clear eyed, and European you are.”

Well, I don't really see how that argument follows, John. Mexican racism doesn't make American racism any more acceptable.

He certainly is correct, the immigration reform proposals are similar, except to the degree of imigrants detained or arrested.

Good blog.

Justin,

I'm in no way trying to defend or justify American racism against Mexican immigrants. I simply argue that Mexicans shouldn't criticize others for something they do themselves.
