Alan Garcia and elections
I recommend Frank Bajak's article on Alan García's role in the Peruvian presidential elections. It can be summed up with three words: ego, ego, and ego. Really, the strangest part of it all is how an individual who is so unpopular and has enacted so many disastrous policies, and who now credits Pope John Paul with Osama bin Laden's death, has any influence at all.

I totally do not get the main assumption underlying this whole theory that Garcia engineered this result"
Garcia successfully calculated that by backing Kuczynski he would help Keiko Fujimori secure second place
By APRA backing Kuczynski, Garcia gave him a significant bump in the polls. So how that helped Fujimori eek out the 2nd place is lost on me.
