My daughter Elizabeth was born this morning at 8:18. She and Amy are both perfectly happy and healthy--it could not have gone more smoothly (especially since she is our third, it also happened pretty fast).

Via Freakonomics Blog: a study showing that college students rate their mother as the most important and influential person in their lives. 40% said their mother was that important. Only 25% said dad was. We dads try, but I guess we’re just not moms.

This is my daughter Julia. She hasn't said so, but I think she's pretty upset that in the big match-up yesterday between Greg Maddux and John Smoltz, the Padres' bullpen couldn't hold the lead.

My son Ben turned five today, and for the second year in row--at his request--we invited a bunch of his preschool friends to Chuck E. Cheese's. His face says it all.
There is much to blog about, but I've had a very nasty case of Strep Throat. Around here, January has been quite an active month for kid-induced illness.
Read more...Of all the many aspects of parenting, there is nothing quite like being vomited on. My two year old daughter has a stomach bug, and I’ve been puked on multiple times in the past 24 hours or so. When they don’t feel well, children want reassurance, so they get extremely close to you when they’re ready.
It’s like the movie Parenthood, where Steve Martin’s character asks his sick daughter if she feels like she wants to throw up. She says, “OK” and then boots all over him.

Thanks to all the students at Sanford Hall (a UNC Charlotte dorm) for the very cool Halloween set up. Every year, students in a number of dorms host trick or treating for children, so last night the kids went around various floors, knocking on doors and getting an enormous amount of candy.

Vote for my Mom. The only caveat is that you have to live in the east county of San Diego.
Went to Queen Anne Cafe this morning--a smoked salmon omelet is a good way to begin the day. It does not have a website, but I found this review, which was fitting. In addition to excellent food:
The noise level in the light, high-ceilinged room muffles most infant and toddler shrieks.
My son was engrossed in his strawberry pancakes, while my daughter's shrieks were muffled.
I'm off to Seattle, where Amy's family lives, so blogging will likely be lighter.

Read more...My son turned four today and we had a party with his friends at Chuck E. Cheese’s. It is loud, crowded, chaotic, crazy, and exhausting for adults, which meant he loved every minute of it.
