It's in the hole!

So Cuba wants more golf courses. I was trying to think of sports more associated with capitalism, and there aren’t many—a large amount of water used to create grass on which to hit a little ball with expensive sticks, with some villas and apartments on the side to boot.

The Cuban government has made various market-oriented reforms over the years, but this one struck me as symbolically relevant.

Jon: for some reason the idea of Che and Fidel playing golf made me laugh. I don't really know why.

Steven: yes, polo might even be *the* capitalist sport. Talk about expensive equipment.

Talk about expensive equipment.

I don't know if expensive equipment is really linked to capitalism vs. communism. After all, hockey has very expensive equipment but the USSR dominated it for years and other Eastern European nations didn't do too badly either.

Polo?

(Ah, Steven beat me to it!)

I would say cricket, but it has been so embraced in India and Pakistan (and other parts of Her Majesty's current and former Realms) that I think it doesn't qualify.

Pretty sure the expense of the "equipment" for polo trumps that for hockey.

Absolutely (although professional ice rinks are expensive). Hockey is still an expensive sport.

But you don't need a rink to play--you just need a frozen pond.

OK, OK, but I was talking in general, not only in Cuba.
