Half marathon

Amy and I ran the Dowd YMCA Half Marathon this morning, alternating pushing the kids in the double jogger stroller. Very chilly race (about 30 degrees at the start). I can’t say I felt fast (just over 2 hours) but it went pretty well, despite a lot of hills (the finish was straight up).

To the spectator at mile 12—blowing a whistle in runners’ ears as they pass is not a good way in encourage them.

Hi Greg,
I found your blog doing a search: http://www.technorati.com/search/Dowd%20YMCA%20Half%20Marathon

I also ran the HM Saturday. It was my first and my most enjoyable race yet. Although that's not what I was thinking about mile 11. I think I came up on you guys about mile 9. I was wearing a white shirt and black shorts. At the time the kids were protesting, probably the cold. I had a very difficult time myself trying to decide what to wear never having run in weather this cold. I gave some words of encouragement to Amy as she pressed on. The kids had calmed down. We had just come up on the first of several speed bumps and she managed to get the kids laughing. About mile 10 there was a major hill that I could only imagine the difficulty of pushing a double stroller up. I finished in just under 2 hrs and walked(wobbled) around the finish chute trying to find the energy to get my chip untied. I saw Amy with the stroller, congratulated her for her effort and went on my way. My apologies for not realizing you were part of the "team". Congratulations on your finish. Hope you both met your personal goals.

I agree, the whistle was way over the top.

Happy running,
Lance from Gastonia

Funny--I was pushing the stroller at the end, and handed it off right after the finish so that I could sit down and take off my chip. So when you talked to her, I was the guy on the ground nearby! During the race, Amy would routinely be ahead when she pushed, esp. on downhills, then I would catch up on uphills. She is always faster than me.
